Re-Edge Kit Instructions

Supplies needed: Foam surround, utility knife (or chisel), glue applicator brush, screwdriver, adhesive
Important: Read these instructions completely before starting.
Step 1) Remove the speaker from the cabinet with a screwdriver. There will be 2 wires connected to the speaker. Make sure to mark which side of the terminal each wire is connected to. (Note: Bose 901 & 802 speakers can be repaired in cabinet. There are 4 small silver nails in each corner of the Bose grills.)
Step 2) Place speaker on a clean, level surface.
Step 3) If the speaker has a gasket OVER the foam's outer edge, remove it by inserting a utility knife under the gasket. Work all the way around the gasket until the glue seal is broken (see figure 1). New gaskets MAY have been provided with your re-edge kit depending on model. In many cases you will need to reuse your original gaskets (ie: JBL LE8, LE10, LE14, many Infinity models, etc.) If your original gaskets are reusable then we recommend you use your original gaskets. NOTE: Do not remove cardboard or Masonite rings from Advent, Dahlquist, AR, or ADS speakers, or if the gasket is UNDER the foam surround. (see SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS)
Step 4) Remove the old foam from the speaker. You can start by using your finger to get most of the foam off. Then use a utility knife, razor blade or chisel to scrape the excess foam from the cone and basket (figures 2 & 3). Be careful not to damage or cut the cone during this process. Remove all foam fragments which have collected during cleaning process by using compressed air or brush. You do not need to completely remove all the glue from the cone or frame. Just make sure you have removed all the old deteriorated foam. The new foam surround will adhere to the old glue just fine.
Step 5) Dry run before you glue: Place the new foam surround on the speaker to check for proper fit to the cone and frame (figure 4). Most speakers have the foam glued to the top of the cone, but some are glued to the back of the cone. Remove the foam surround from the speaker. (Please note: If the foam does not fit perfect, it should still work fine. In some cases the original foam is no longer available and we may substitute the closest match. You may also need to trim the outside of the foam with scissors for it to sit on the frame properly).
Step 6) Gluing the surround is done in two stages. First stage: Apply a small bead of adhesive to the edge of cone where the old surround was attached (figure 5). Using the glue applicator brush, spread the glue to a flat uniform film (figure 6). Place new foam surround onto cone and gently apply pressure with your finger (figure 7). Move your finger around the surround until the surround is glued securely to the cone
(figure 7). Let adhesive dry. We recommend waiting 24 hours for complete curing.
Step 7) Second Stage: Apply adhesive to frame of speaker (underneath foam surround) (figure 8) and smooth adhesive using your finger or glue applicator brush (figure 9). Press down on surround all the way around speaker and smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles (figure 9). (Note: When repairing Bose 901 & 802 speakers, step 6 & 7 are done at the same time. You do not wait 24 hours for the second stage. You apply the glue to the cone and frame at the same time.)
Step 8) Press downward gently on cone near the center and listen for any scraping of voice coil (figure 10). If you hear scraping you must move the cone assembly slightly in the opposite direction and press down again on cone. Keep doing this until the voice coil is properly aligned with no scraping sounds.
Step 9) Apply a small amount of adhesive to gaskets and attach gaskets to speaker (figure 11 and 12). The gaskets may need to be cut slightly for proper fit (figure 13). Once again apply pressure to cone to make sure it's still in proper alignment (figure 10). After you are confident with your work, let speaker sit another 24 hours to assure proper curing (figure 14).
Congratulations! You have just re-edged your speaker!
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
If you have an Advent or Dahlquist speaker with a Masonite ring on the outer edge, you must apply glue to the underside of the ring. There will be no gasket used.
If you have an AR, ADS or any speaker with a gasket UNDER the foam, do not remove it. You will glue the new foam surround directly on top of this gasket. There is no need to apply a new gasket to the top of the foam surround.
If you find that your speaker needs more work than just the foam surround, you may send it to us for a complete recone. This includes ALL NEW PARTS (cone, voice coil, spider, gasket, dome, etc.). You may view our Recone Pricing here.
