KEF 104/2 Woofer Refoam Project (8.16.2010)

My 104/2 woofers foam surrounds finally gave out so I quickly ordered Orange County's refoam kit before the voice coils destroyed themselves. Without the foam surrounds to hold the cone assembly motion pistonic, the coils will rub and quickly fail.

The kit arrived in 2 days! I followed the directions closely and all four woofers are back in specification without any rubbing issues.

Thank you Orange County Speaker. I have another 15 years of listening enjoyment ahead of me!

I found the materials provided to be first rate and complete. However, I had trouble with one of the four drivers. I have done a number of foam replacements, including the larger Advent and a pair of Bose 901s. The tolerances for the KEF drivers seems to be much tighter, making it difficult to center the cones by hand. After completing all four drivers, one of them scraped. I really need to redo it from scratch, but I carefully pried the outer foam off and reset it. It works now but looks messy.

Also, because of the way the center foam works, it is necessary to lift the cone to glue the center. Maybe the center should be done first, but the instructions don't mention the center foam.

At any rate, I've tested the results with some bass heavy rock music and some pipe organ music having very low bass. I don't detect any scraping in actual listening. I should say that I don't listen at high volumes. I turned up a Bob Seger album to as high as my wife would allow and heard no misbehavior. For future reference I would recommend that first timers consider having KEF drivers done by Orange county. It costs a bit more, but these speakers are worth repairing at almost any cost.

I would give technical support five stars. The procedure for removing these drivers is not obvious, and the Orange County technician was able to give me clear and complete instructions.
